Oatmeal-Sunflower Bread

8 ingredients
8 steps

Ingredients

  • 2 c. oats
  • 3 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 2 Tbsp. dry yeast
  • 2/3 to 3/4 c. molasses
  • 1 large Tbsp. butter
  • 3/4 c. hulled sunflower seeds
  • 5 1/2 c. flour (1 c. white, 4 1/2 c. whole wheat)

Directions

  1. 1
Pour boiling water over oats and salt; let stand 1 hour. Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
  2. 2
Add yeast to oats after they have stood 1 hour.
  3. 3
Add remaining ingredients in order. Knead in enough flour (any extra should be of whole wheat as there is enough white to allow this bread to be light) to make a smooth velvety dough.
  4. 4
Let rise to twice original size.
  5. 5
Knead down. Shape into 2 loaves, place in oiled bread pans and cover.
  6. 6
Let rise to 2/3 finished size (allowing for 1/3 rise in oven) and bake about 1 hour at 350°.
  7. 7
    A delicious sandwich bread.
  8. 8
Try it with mayonnaise and alfalfa sprouts.
