- 4 medium onions, sliced 1/4-inch thick
- cold water
- 3/4 c. flour
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2/3 c. milk
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. shortening, melted and cooled
- oil for frying
Directions

1Separate onion slices into rings; soak in cold water for 30 minutes.

2Meanwhile, in a small bowl, beat flour, egg, milk, sugar, salt and shortening together.

3Drain onions and pat dry. With fork, dip rings into batter.

4Preheat oil to 375°.

5Fry in at least 1-inch of oil a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown.

6Drain on paper towels.

7Keep warm in oven while frying remaining rings.
