- 3 Tbsp. butter
- 4 c. onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 tsp. sugar
- 1 Tbsp. flour
- salt
- freshly ground pepper
- 4 slices French bread, dried or toasted
- 1/2 c. freshly grated parmesan cheese
Directions

1Melt butter in a large pot, add onions and cook very slowly, about 45 minutes, over low heat, stirring often.

2Stir in sugar, flour and cook for 3 minutes.

3Add water and simmer partially covered for 30 minutes.

4Add salt and pepper to taste.
