Ingredients

  • 1 bag dried split peas
  • 1 lb. carrots
  • 4 medium potatoes
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 2 lb. ham (end)
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1/8 tsp. chili pepper
  • 1 medium onion

Directions

    Soak beans 4 hours or overnight.

    Discard water.

    Dice potatoes (skin on), celery, carrots and onion.

    Add ham.

    Put in 6-quart pot.

    Cover ingredients with water.

    Simmer 4 hour.

    Remove ham. Remove fat and bone.

    Cut ham into bite-size pieces.

    Return to soup.

    To thin, cook longer.

    To thicken, add water.

    Serve with toasted bagels.
