Ingredients
- 2 cups yellow split peas or 2 cups split pea flour
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- pepper
- 1 cup water (or more)
- 2 cups vegetable oil (for deep frying)
Directions

1If using already ground split peas omit step 2, 3 and 4.

2Place split peas in a pot with 6 cups water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to simmer and cook until soft ( about 45 mins).

3Drain and place in a food processor.

4Grind to a coarse ,meal, resembling couscous.

5Add the garlic, turmeric, cumin, baking powder, flour salt and pepper to the ground split peas.

6Gradually add one cup water to the split pea mixture, stirring to form a thick batter.

7Heat oil in a deep frying pan and drop the batter into the oil by the tablespoonful. Fry until golden brown, turning often.

8Remove from oil and drain on a plate with paper towels.

9Serve with your favourite chutney.
