- 1 oz. red food coloring (add 1 oz. water to coloring)
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 Tbsp. vinegar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 Tbsp. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 c. flour
Directions

1Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.

2Make paste of cocoa and food coloring.

3Add to first mixture.

4Add alternately flour and buttermilk.

5Add vanilla.

6Mix soda and vinegar over bowl; add to batter and blend.

7Bake at 350° in oblong pan 30 to 35 minutes.
