- 1 lb dried pinto bean
- 4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 14 cup bacon grease or 14 cup shortening
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
Directions

1Soak beans in cold tap water for 6 to 8 hours.

2Drain water and rinse thoroughly.

3Inspect pintos and discard and unsuitable beans or debris.

4Place beans in large heavy pot.

5Place pot over heat and bring to boil.

6Cover and reduce heat, simmering for 4 to 6 hours, stirring occasionally.

7Beans are done when they become very tender.

8Stir or mash beans until approximately half are mashed and the remainder of the beans are left whole.

9If it appears that there will be too much water and beans will be too runny, pour off part of liquid and reserve for use later if needed.

10Heat grease or shortening in large heavy skillet over medium high heat.

11Add onions and saute until transparent.

12Add bean mixture and heat thoroughly.
