- 8 cups water, divided
- 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 1/2 pound cooked ham, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1/2 red onion, minced
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar

- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- salt to taste
