  • 1/2 c. chopped onion
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 3 slices bread (2 1/4 c.), crumbled
  • 6 medium tomatoes, peeled and sliced (about 3 1/2 c.)
  • salt
  • pepper
  • sugar

Directions

    Cook onion in butter until tender. Stir in bread crumbs in a 1-quart casserole dish.

    Layer half the tomatoes.

    Sprinkle with salt, pepper and sugar. Cover with half the crumb mixture. Repeat layers.

    Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 30 minutes.
