  • 1 c. dates, cut small
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 c. chopped walnuts

    Mix the first 4 ingredients; let cool.

    Cream shortening and sugar.

    Add eggs, flour and salt alternately with liquid.

    Add vanilla; mix well.

    Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan. Dribble chocolate chips and nuts over batter.

    Bake for 40 minutes, or until done, in a 350° oven.

    Cool, then sprinkle with powdered sugar.
