  • 4 or more egg whites
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 stick butter or half Crisco
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 3 c. flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp. cold water

    Beat egg whites and 1/2 cup sugar.

    Set aside.

    Cream together butter and 1 cup sugar.

    Sift flour and baking powder.

    Add milk alternately with dry ingredients and vanilla.

    Mix in egg whites and add cold water.

    Pour into 2 (8 or 9-inch) round layer pans. Bake in moderate oven (325° to 350°) for about 20 minutes.
