  • 5 tablespoons instant coffee or espresso powder
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 5 eggs, separated, one yolk reserved for icing
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For the Icing:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg yolk (reserved from cake)
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons coffee or espresso (liquid)
