- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 12 teaspoon salt
- 14 teaspoon baking soda
- 14 cup shortening
- 14 cup butter, plus
- 1 tablespoon melted butter, divided
- 1 cup buttermilk
Directions

1Preheat oven to 425F Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and baking soda in a medium bowl.

2Cut in the shortening and 1/4 cup butter with a pastry blender or 2 knives until coarse crumbs form.

3Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk.

4Quickly fold the dry ingredients into the buttermilk with your hands until a sticky dough forms.

5Transfer the dough to a floured surface.

6Gently fold the dough over itself 3 or 4 times to create layers.

7Roll the dough to a 1-inch thickness.

8Cut with a 3-inch biscuit cutter, pushing straight down through the dough.

9Repeat with any remaining scraps of dough.

10Place the biscuits on a baking sheet 1/4 inch apart.

11Brush with the melted butter.

12Bake until golden brown, 2022 minutes.
