- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 4 egg whites
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2Lightly grease two 9 inch layer cake pans.

3Cream the shortening, add the sugar gradually.

4Sift the flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt.

5Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk to the creamed mixture.

6Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks are formed.

7Fold the beaten egg whites and the vanilla into the cake batter.

8Pour batter into the prepared pans.

9Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes.
