Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/4 lb. breakfast sausage loaf (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • about 1/2 c. milk
  • 3 to 4 slices white bread, broken in pieces
  • handful of Grape-Nuts cereal
  • 3/4 tsp. ground sage
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • pepper to taste
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 1/2 c. chopped parsley
  • about 2 Tbsp. flour (for making gravy) and 1 to 2 c. water

Directions

    Mix all ingredients (except flour) in a large bowl (knead with hands), meat first, then dry ingredients, then remaining ingredients.

    Set in covered bowl in refrigerator to blend for 1 to 2 hours.

    Form into loaf and bake in uncovered, greased pan at 300° for about 1 3/4 to 2 hours.

    Make gravy from drippings, using the 2 tablespoons flour and water.

    (Best if made and baked one day and served the next.)
