- 2 c. flour, sifted
- 2 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 sticks margarine
- 4 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 c. water
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Directions

1Measure sifted flour and sift together with sugar.

2Set aside. Stir baking soda into buttermilk in cup and set aside.

3In a 2-quart saucepan, melt the margarine and stir in cocoa and water. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil and remove from stove.

4Add sugar/flour mixture gradually with spoon.

5(You will not need electric mixer.)

6Stir in buttermilk mixture and then add eggs and vanilla, beating well.

7Turn into greased 9 x 13-inch pan and bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted comes out clean.

8While cake is baking, prepare frosting.
