- 1/4 c. packed brown sugar
- 1/4 c. shortening
- 1/4 c. margarine or butter, softened
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg, separated
- 1 c. all-purpose flour *
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 c. finely chopped nuts
- jelly
Directions

1Heat oven to 350°.

2Mix brown sugar, shortening, margarine, vanilla and egg yolk.

3Stir in flour and salt until dough holds together.

4Shape into 1-inch balls.

5Beat egg whites slightly. Dip each ball into egg white; roll in nuts.

6Place about 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.

7Press thumb deeply in center of each.

8Bake until light brown about 10 minutes.

9Immediately remove from cookie sheet; cool.

10Fill thumbprints with jelly. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
