  • 1/4 pound string beans, ends trimmed, cut into 1-inch pieces

  • 1 red onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice (1 cup)
  • 3/4 cup toasted walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped chives
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Bread or crackers, for serving
