- 3 pkg. dry yeast or 1 yeast cake
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 4 tsp. salt
- 1/3 c. shortening
- 5 c. water
- 16 to 18 c. flour
Directions

1Sprinkle yeast into warm water; stir until dissolved.

2Combine sugar, salt, water and shortening.

3Stir in 8 cups flour.

4Add yeast and enough (8 to 10 cups) of flour to make stiff dough that leaves the bowl when stirred.

5Knead for 5 to 10 minutes until smooth.

6Place in greased bowl; cover and let rise until double, about 1 1/2 hours.

7Knead dough back and allow to rise again. When dough has doubled, bake at 400° for 30 to 35 minutes.

8Makes around 4 loaves.
